Nan Wetherhorn RN on the Patient Advocacy Now Podcast: Simplifying the Complex Healthcare System

Introduction
In this episode, we chat with Nan Wetherhorn, a South Florida Independent Patient Advocate and nurse since 1976. Nan learned how important it is to have someone advocate for you during her mother’s fight with cancer. Her mom, a pharmacist, understood her diagnosis and treatment options, but like many patients, she couldn’t fully advocate for herself. So Nan stepped in—talking with doctors, asking the hard questions, and becoming part of her mom’s care team, just like many family members do.
With over 30 years of experience as an ICU nurse and a background in caring for both children and adults in cardiac, neuro, surgical, and trauma units, Nan is now focused on helping patients take control of their healthcare. She offers education, tools, and support so people can make informed, confident decisions.
Thanks to her deep clinical knowledge, Nan is comfortable talking with doctors and specialists and can explain complex medical information to her clients in a clear, simple way. She’s also had a global nursing career—working in neonatal ICUs in Switzerland and taking on roles in France and North Africa—long before travel nursing became popular. These international experiences gave her a broad view of healthcare and patient safety, making her a powerful advocate and guide for patients and families navigating the system today.
